‘Nasi briyani’ was one of the local delights enjoyed by residents at the Family Night-cum-Malaysia Day street party.

KUALA LUMPUR: a street party was recently organised by the Area Security Committee for households in the areas of Jalan Limau Purut, Jalan Limau Manis and Jalan Maarof here.

About 450 residents of all races gathered for Family Night-cum-Malaysia Day celebration at Jalan Limau Purut.Also present at the joyous occasion were Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister, Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin, and Lembah Pantai member of parliament, Nurul Izzah Anwar.

Raja Nong Chik said: “Many people living in Kuala Lumpur are so busy they often forget the importance of neighbourliness. Therefore, we want more of this kind of celebration being organised at street level, as it will help build good rapport among the people.

Since its formation last December, the committee has held street parties and jumble sales, earlier this year.the chairman of the committee, Daniel Alfred, said: “Snatch thefts, robberies and house break-ins happened almost everyday before the formation of this committee.

“We now also have a 24-hour patrolling team at the residential area to ensure better security.”He added that four subcommittees, namely, fellowship, guards supervision, subscription monitoring and block directory database, were formed to ensure the effectiveness of the anti-crime project.One of the pioneers for crime prevention project, Zabedah Mohd Noor, 72, has been living in this area since she was young.

“Fellowship is important for building trust among neighbours, which helps in tackling crime,” said Zabedah, who is the chairman of fellowship subcommittee.a 56-year-old resident, Ini Ariff, said: “I have been living here since 1973, and the neighbours here get along well regardless of race and religion. When something happens or if someone needs help, we can always count on each other, as we live like one big family here.”
